Where to Eat...

Breakfast

The best place to start is the cafeteria at St. Olaf College. There are chefs there who will make you a personalized omelet out of ingredients that you select yourself! There's also an endless supply of fruit, cereal, coffee, tea, and juice, among other things.

Lunch

When you're downtown, stop by Hogan Brothers's sub shop for a unique Northfield take on the hoagie. The atmosphere of the restaurant is quirky and fun, and prices are affordable for college students and their families.

Dinner

The Ole Cafe, just outside of the St. Olaf campus, provides a relaxed setting for dinner with visiting family members or friends. Again, entrees are pretty affordable, and you're within walking distance of campus.

What to Do...

Morning

Explore the beautiful grounds at St. Olaf College, including the natural prairies near the new wind turbine and the more manicured gardens up on the Hill. It's also always fun to stop by a larger lecture class on Roman history, Greek mythology, or Shakespeare--the professors are usually very welcoming!

Afternoon

In the afternoon, head downtown to browse some of Northfield's amazing independent stores. First, stroll down the picturesque main street, and check out the niche shops that sell things ranging from candy to Norwegian sweaters and books. Then, investigate the used book shops and soap and lotion stores further down.

Evening

Hang out at the Ole Cafe for an extra cup of tea or coffee after your dinner, and spend quality time reconnecting with your family members. You could also take a walk up and down St. Olaf Avenue after dinner, to look at the beautiful older houses and gardens there.

Late Night

Head back to your hotel or on-campus accommodations, and grab a free movie from the St. Olaf library to relax with.

Comments

Northfield is a great place to spend your college years, and it's also got lots of interesting things to do with family visitors. If you don't manage to see everything during the first visit, you can always save some ideas for later!
